<p>According to <a href="http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2013/02/harlem-shake-meme-dead/62098/" target="_blank">David Wagner at The Atlantic Wire</a>, “the hosts of the Today show committed meme murder&#8221; and <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/02/14/harlem-shake-all-the-memes-the-today-show-killed-video.html" target="_blank">Kevin Fallon at The Daily Beast</a> noting that &#8220;It’s like when your mom says “I love that song” — the song immediately becomes uncool&#8221;.</p>
<p>After countless Harlem Shake parody videos, not to mention <a href="http://socialfresh.com/16-brands-do-the-harlem-shake/" target="_blank">many brands already getting on the bandwagon</a>, surely this video from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/freddiew" target="_blank">YouTube legend Freddie Wong</a> will be the one to end them all.</p>

<p>The Harlem Shake started life as the &#8216;albee&#8217; dance in 1981 at a Harlem basketball game and was briefly resurrected by P Diddy in G.Dep&#8217;s video for Let&#8217;s Get It (at the very end).</p>

<p>Now, the Harlem Shake is a fully fledged internet meme on a par with Gangnam Style following Filthy Frank&#8217;s eccentric dance video set to Brooklyn-based DJ Baauer&#8217;s 2012 tune.</p>
<p>And, like Gangnam Style, it didn&#8217;t take long for YouTube to go crazy with countless Harlem Shake parody videos. </p>
<p>According to YouTube Trends Kevin Allocca, as of February 11th, &#8220;around 12,000 &#8216;Harlem Shake&#8217; videos had been posted since the start of the month and they&#8217;d already been watched upwards of 44 million times&#8221;.</p>

Off it, the commercials proved to have the most social media buzz (Oreo&#8217;s viral tweet aside) with over 24 million real-time social media conversations taking place across Twitter, Facebook, blogs and forums for the duration of the game <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/money/la-fi-mo-super-bowl-commercials-20130204,0,2174310.story" target="_blank">according to the LA Times</a>.</p>

<p>The clever use of real-time marketing from Oreo and <a href="http://www.360i.com/" title="360i Oreo digital marketing agency" target="_blank">360i</a>, their digital marketing agency, during <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2013/02/03/superdome-black-out-super-bowl-xlvii/1889009/" title="SuperBowl blackout New Orleans" target="_blank">the power outage</a> generated 10,000 retweets in an hour, <a href="http://adage.com/article/special-report-super-bowl/marketers-jump-super-bowl-blackout-twitter/239575/" title="AdAge SuperBowl Marketing Oreo Twitter" target="_blank">according to AdAge</a>, and about 8,000 new Twitter followers for <a href="https://twitter.com/oreo" title="Oreo Twitter" target="_blank">Oreo</a>.</p>
<p>With a &#8216;social media war room&#8217; in place at 360i&#8217;s headquarters in New York, Oreo proved that a simple idea executed extremely well, not to mention the ability to make decisions quickly, can be far more effective than an expensive TV commercial.</p>
